View Full Version : Rapid evaluation of the acutely injured patient

When the patient is received in the emergency unit the following instructions should be considered:
1- Don't be panic.
2- Don't lose time with dead or hopeless dying patient while other hopeful patients deteriorating without medical supervision.
3- Alert the operating room.
4- There are 3 categories of hopeful patients: (Triage)
a) Patients with external bleeding or airway obstruction, should be dealt with within 5 or 10 minutes.
b) Patients received severe trauma but stable you can delay surgery for 1: 2 hours.
c) Patient exposed to blunt trauma with no apparent injury need a lot of investigations which will take long time.
This step is called triage, it should be completed and the decision is made within one minute. Triage may be necessary both in field and in the hospital setting.
