Tests
Important definitions
Tidal Volume = volume of air expired after basal inspiration = 500 c.c
Residual Volume = volume of air present within lung after forced
expiration = 1200 c.c
Vital capacity = volume of air expired after the deepest inspiration =
4600 c.c
Maximum breathing capacity = volume of air expired after the deepest
inspiration over one minutes = 110-130 L/m.
Timed vital capacity (FEV1): normally vital capacity expired within 3
seconds
1st second most of vital capacity is expired, about 80%

= forced expiratory volume one
= FEV1, if = obstructive airway disease.
Pulmonary function are:
Ventilation: Passage of air in & out lung.
Perfusion: Passage of blood in & out lung
= blood supply of lung
Diffusion: i.e. diffusion of gases between blood
