    Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)
    Separation of posterior hyaloid face from retina
    Mechanism: vitreous syneresis (liquefaction) and
    contraction with age
    Symptoms: floaters; may see flashes (due to traction on
    retina)

    Findings: acute symptomatic PVD may have retinal tear
    (10–15% of acute symptomatic PVDs), vitreous hemorrhage
    (hemorrhagic PVD; 7.5% of PVDs) if vessel is torn during
    vitreous separation (70% risk of retinal tear), retinal
    detachment (RD) especially when pigmented vitreous cell is
    present
