The following course is not provided by the Society for Vascular Surgery
Access to this CME program is provided as a service to the vascular surgery community. However, this educational activity is not sponsored by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). The statements and opinions expressed within this educational program are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the SVS. SVS disclaims any responsibility and/or liability for such information. A CME accredited online carotid education and stenting course is now available. This online training program is designed to provide physicians and staff with access to the latest information on the management and treatment of carotid artery disease. Getting startedAfter you access the site, click the “launch” button at the bottom to begin. As a first time user, you must complete the free registration and choose a Username and Password and complete other information so that you obtain CME credits from the Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: • Identify the cervicocranial arterial anatomy, pathophysiology, and ensuing risk factors of carotid artery disease and stroke • Describe the typical presentation of carotid artery stenosis and various invasive and noninvasive imaging studies used to diagnose stenosis and assess the potential benefit of interventional therapy • Discuss the surgical treatment options for carotid artery stenosis • Discuss procedures and perioperative complications • List key steps involved in the Carotid Stenting Procedure • Identify the best therapeutic option, such as carotid artery stenting, carotid endarterectomy, or medical intervention, for patients with carotid artery disease, based on their history, physical exam, and diagnostic studies. • Identify DSA and non-DSA images of the vessels that supply the upper neck and the cerebrum, and the common devices utilized in carotid angiography and stenting procedure. Carotid Stent eLearning Modules Introduction to Carotid Artery Disease and Stroke This module, focusing on the introduction to Carotid Artery Disease and Stroke, is intended to provide physicians with basic education in carotid artery disease and stroke, carotid and upper neck anatomy, including intracranial and extracranial vasculature. Diagnosis of Carotid Artery Disease This module, focusing on the diagnosis of Carotid Artery Disease, is intended to provide physicians with basic education on various diagnostic modalities, including the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Treatment of Carotid Artery Disease This module, focusing on the treatment of Carotid Artery Disease, is intended to provide physicians with basic education in two major intervention modalities of Carotid Artery Disease, Carotid Endarterectomy and Carotid Artery Stenting. Carotid Stenting Procedure This module, focusing on the Carotid Stenting procedure, is intended to provide physicians with basic education in major steps involved in carotid stenting. Carotid Stenting Simulation This module, providing an interactive simulation on the Carotid Stenting procedure, is intended to provide physicians with basic education in the major steps involved in carotid stenting. Patient Selection This module, Patient Selection, consists of 12 scenarios of patients that may be encountered in a Physician's practice. Each scenario provides a synopsis of patient's initial presentation, a brief history and physical examination (H&P), as well as results of any available diagnostic studies such as a carotid duplex. The content for this module was obtained from the Medical Simulation Corporation (MSC), and this module can accompany MSC's Carotid Intervention Course. Carotid Angiography This module, carotid angiography, is intended to provide physicians with basic education and familiarity with angiographic images of the aortic and supraaortic vessels,. All of the imagery was reconstructed from actual cases performed by the consultants on this program. This project is supported by an educational grant from Boston Scientific. Source |
